My Services Approach

Therapy sessions with me are much like any other conversation. I take time to get to know you and understand your concerns, and to help you feel comfortable. We start with a brief consultation call, to make sure we both feel it’s a good fit, and so I can answer your questions before you proceed. Therapy sessions can be online or in-person in San Diego. Sessions are 55 minutes (unless we discuss some alternative timeframe) and occur weekly or biweekly. My main focus is on LGBTQ+ folks, and I frequently work with clients on issues such as coming out later in life, anxiety, religious trauma, navigating divorce and break ups, self-worth/self-esteem, perfectionism, work stress, relationship problems, and grief and loss. My style is generally conversational and client-focused. EMDR therapy is a more structured approach, and we can discuss whether this seems like the right approach for you. I will sometimes ask you to do some type of “homework” outside of session, but never without discussion or you agreeing to the assignment.

In person therapy in San Diego

While online therapy can be quite effective, there is something helpful about the experience of going to an office, sitting on a sofa, and being in the same air as your therapist. Maybe it’s the change of environment that provides a feeling of sanctuary from the rest of life. For some, it’s the only way to get real privacy to talk through their concerns. I provide in-person therapy on Wednesdays and Fridays. My office is in North Park/University Heights, on Adams Ave.

Online therapy in California

Many of my clients like having therapy sessions in the comfort of their own home. Some prefer not having to spend the travel time to and from my office, or they find it’s the best way to fit therapy into their schedule. Virtual therapy is also an option for those who usually come in person, but need to occasionally switch to online.

EMDR therapy

EMDR stands for “Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing,” and it is a structured approach usually used for trauma treatment. It can help your brain digest and integrate painful memories so that they don’t bother you as much as they do now. Here is an explanation of what it is and how it works.

Religious Trauma therapy

If you have a history with high-control or fundamentalist religion, or another type of high-control organization or environment, and you’re experiencing anxiety, interpersonal problems, low self-worth, confusion, sexual problems, negative self-talk, or religious-themed nightmares, you may have religious trauma or spiritual trauma. Queer and trans folks may experience this because of the negative messaging they experienced around their gender and sexuality identities. It’s important to see a therapist who understands that religion or spirituality is not always a positive force in people’s lives.

Therapy for Anxiety

You are definitely not alone if you’re suffering from anxiety or panic. Anxiety problems, though unpleasant and sometimes debilitating, are common. We can address your anxiety concerns in therapy from a variety of angles, including processing your stressors, learning new coping skills, exploring possible lifestyle adjustments, resolving past trauma or grief, increasing relationship skills, and more.
